Why are the fatal accident risks higher on rural roads?

On Behalf of | May 3, 2025 | Car Accidents

There are technically fatal accident risks every time you drive, on any road. This is true for small rural roads, city streets, interstate highways and more.

That said, looking at the statistics shows a clear trend. Some reports claim that more than 50% of fatal crashes happen on rural roads, despite the fact that the majority of Americans live in urban areas—meaning these rural roads get much less traffic. Why is the fatal accident rate so high?

It takes longer to get medical care

Part of the reason is that medical care is usually farther away from these remote accidents. This delays the care a person receives from EMTs on the scene or at the hospital. With some injuries, such as bleeding around the brain, time is critical, so any delay increases the odds that the person will pass away.

The speed limits are higher

Additionally, higher speeds usually equate to more severe injuries in car accidents. Imagine two identical head-on collisions, one at 25 miles per hour in the city and the other at 60 miles per hour on a rural road. The faster accident is far more likely to have fatal results.

Do you deserve financial compensation?

Have you lost a loved one in a car accident that another driver caused? Whether it was on a rural road or a city street, you may believe that the other driver was responsible, meaning you and your family may deserve financial compensation. This could cover things like lost wages—especially if the person who passed away was the family’s main breadwinner—medical bills, funeral costs and more. Be sure you know what legal steps to take to seek the compensation you deserve.
